Established in 1856, Burberry is a global British luxury brand with a heritage of innovation, craftsmanship and design. Inspired by exploration, Thomas Burberry invented the waterproof fabric gabardine to protect from the elements, creating the foundation for the iconic trench coat that today remains at the core of the business. Founded in 1856, the name Burberry has become synonymous with prestige and quality throughout the world and symbolises the very essence of British Style.
Thomas Burberry created the breathable and waterproof fabric – Gabardine, and in 1901 Burberry were commissioned to design a new uniform for British Officers. Around this time the Burberry Equestrian Knight logo was developed and trademarked.
The first man to reach the South Pole, Captain Roald Amundsen was outfitted in Burberry and left his Gabardine as a signal that his mission was successful. Around the time of World War I the military uniform was adapted to meet the needs of the time and so the famous Burberry trenchcoat was born.
