5 London Restaurants for Tasty Vegan Food
Over the last decade or so becoming vegan has exploded in popularity. A lifestyle rather than a menu choice, it’s no surprise that when it comes to finding somewhere to have a quick bite or a fine dining experience, vegans want to know that they are entering a venue that upholds their vegan values as well as providing a delicious meal.
222 Veggie Vegan
Opened in 2004, 222 has fast become a firm favorite of both vegans and non vegans alike. Nestled on North End Road in trendy Fulham close to West Kensington tube the café serves a daily lunchtime buffet in chilled out, cosy atmosphere and then opens again in the evening for dinner. Head chef Ben uses fresh, natural ingredients to create mouthwatering and beautiful dishes. The in-house special, aptly named 'Ben's Special' is a hearty stir-fry, prepared to your choice of spiciness and always prepared with the vegetables of the season, and the seitan stroganoff is a healthy and tasty alternative to the usual meat versions. A raw menu adds an extra healthy dimension to this must visit eatery.
Mildred's
With four restaurants in London, you're never too far from a Mildred's. Originally opened in Soho in the 80s they have branched out, with venues in Soho in the Carnaby district, Kings Cross on the famous Pentonville Road, Camden a short stroll from Camden Lock and Dalston in the wonderful Dalston square. Each one has it's own style and individual décor, all offering a variety of cuisines, from the very british wood roasted mushroom and ale pie to the delicately spiced Sri Lankan sweet potato and green bean curry, almost everything on the menu is either vegan or has a vegan option. An extensive dessert menu featuring the mouthwatering peanut butter chocolate mousse cake means Mildred's is a great place to meet friends or enjoy a date. Each Mildred's feels like a home from home, why not try them all!
The Blacksmith and the Toffeemaker
Recently making their menu 100% vegan this Clerkenwell pub 5 minutes walk from Angel tube is making waves. Offering a take away service as well as eating in at the beautifully rustic and chic restaurant they offer a small but tasty menu, with variations of many non vegan favourites. Missing Mac n cheese? You won't be after sampling their vegan version! The Halloumi and kimchi burger will hit the spot and if you're partial to a pub quiz then book a table every Monday at 7pm, where you can also get great deals on the food and possibly win yourself some cash! The pub is also child and dog friendly, which makes for a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.
Mao Chow
It's vegan. It's a Chinese. What's not to love? A pop up café situated at Pamela on the superb Kingsland Road, 20 minutes walk worth of bars, shops and restaurants between Dalston and Shoreditch you won't regret your visit. Dan Dan noodles including an 'egg', 'pork' and chive dumplings and smoked 'beef' jerky fried rice it's all as delicious as it sounds. Mao Chow is the answer to a vegan's prayers and the small but perfectly formed Pamela bar is a fantastic location. The attention to detail to bring vegan versions of firm favourites is astounding, ask them how they make that 'egg', it will blow your mind! Don't forget to book though, it's in demand.
Club Mexicana
Got a taste for totally banging Mexican street food? Of course you have, so head on down to Club Mexicana at the Spread Eagle on Homerton High Street, just a few moments walk from Homerton station every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 100% vegan and 100% delicious, choose from some absolutely lip smacking tacos, burritos and nachos that would have even the most hardened meat eater weak at the knees and revel in the fun, relaxed setting of this pop up. Don't fancy Mexican? Don't worry, the pub menu is totally vegan too. Winner.
Whether you're visiting for the weekend, a seasoned Londoner or just looking for something different to your usual restaurant then these vegan eateries should be on your must visit list, proving once and for all that vegan food is exciting, fun and most importantly absolutely delicious.
