Introducing The Chequers Tavern...
Situated in the heart of London, in Duke Street St James, The Chequers Tavern represent the oldest of our pubs. After the great fire of London in 1666, Henry Mason was granted a licence to open an Ale House that was named in his honor : "Mason Arms". It was situated next to "Cavendish House" home of the Lady Cavendish "The duchess of Duke Street" and mistress to King Edward VII who resided at the closest Palace of St James.
At the rear of Cavendish House and The Mason Arms, was "Mason Yard", where the Stonemasons prepared the stones for the building of Westminister Palace. The Coachmens and grooms would park their coaches and horses in Mason yard and they waited for their masters, who were being entertained at Cavendish House.
They wiled away their time drinking ale and playing chequers on the steps of the ale house. So, in time The Masons Arms became known as The Chequers Tavern and soon had a new sign depicting a Chequers Board.
The Chequers Tavern it's been the focal point of the community around since then. With his traditional interiors and quite hospitality it represent the perfect spot to have a good pint after work enjoying the company of our lovely staff.
At The Chequers Tavern we offer a selection of ales, ciders, lagers, wines and bar drinks and a typical english menu enriched by special dishes that change every week.
