The market cart is laden with fresh produce. On the right is a woodcutter, a favourite motif of Gainsborough's, but the composition is dominated by the grandeur of the trees.
This is one of Gainsborough's last landscapes. It was first exhibited in the artist's house in Pall Mall in 1786, the same year it was painted. Gainsborough added the figure of the woodman gathering faggots the following year.
