Saint John baptises Jesus Christ in the river Jordan. This is perhaps the end section from a predella panel, supporting pilaster, or flat-fronted pillar.
The rest of the altarpiece has not definitely been identified, although it has been suggested that together with scenes from the lives of Saints James and John the Baptist and the Crucifixion (Paris, Louvre) this could have been part of an altarpiece for the Nobili family chapel of S. Jacopo and S. Giovanni Decollato in S. Maria degli Angeli, Florence.
