The young Saint John the Baptist is included at the left and the Annunciation to the shepherds can be seen in the centre background. The journey of the Magi is depicted in the right background.
This is one of three similar pictures of the same subject which appear to be by the same hand (the other two are in the United States, one in the Nelson Atkins Museum, Kansas City). It was formerly attributed to Savoldo.
