1700s

Hendricks, who was a distinguished portrait painter in Haarlem, was steeped in the work of his 17th-century predecessors. He made copies after Frans Hals (about 1580? - 1666) and other painters of the Golden Age. In this still life he imitates the style of Jan van Os (1744 - 1808), whose work is represented in the National Gallery by two flower pieces ('Fruit, Flowers and a Fish' and 'Fruit and Flowers in a Terracotta Vase').
