Corot painted numerous landscapes around Douai in the Artois region of north-east France. This is one of five paintings in the National Gallery started during a trip there in 1871. It was painted in May of that year when Corot was a guest of his friend and biographer, Alfred Robaut. The bright red note of the man's cap is a common motif in Corot's later landscapes.
