As Christ prays, the angel presents the chalice, indicating the forthcoming sufferings, and points towards the Instruments of the Passion. In the foreground the Apostles sleep; in the background Judas approaches with soldiers to arrest Christ.
The composition and the light effects are perhaps inspired by the celebrated painting of the same subject by Correggio (London, Aspley House, Wellington Museum), an artist greatly admired by Ludovico.
