In his late career, Forain became preoccupied with law-court scenes, many of which recall the work of Honoré-Victorin Daumier.
This picture was once owned by Henri Rouart, a friend of Forain and also of Degas, who painted his daughter in 1886 in the picture 'Hélène Rouart in her Father's Study'.
