The identity of this donor, who is shown at prayer before a devotional book, is not known.
This was presumably the left wing of a triptych. The right wing was probably a female donor (donatrix), and may have been a panel once in a private collection in Germany. The central part of the triptych has not been identified.
The landscape is in the style of Patinir, who collaborated with Massys.
