Christ is shown wearing the crown of thorns and the robe given to him in mockery by the soldiers before the Crucifixion. The episode is recounted in the New Testament (for example, in John 19: 1-3).
Emotional imagery of this kind was designed to focus contemplation on the suffering of Christ, and seems to have been introduced into Italy by Netherlandish painters.
