Portrait of a Man
by National Gallery

£20.00

1800s

The unidentified sitter seems to be wearing the ribbon of the Légion d'Honneur. He may have been a friend or acquaintance of the painter Edgar Degas as the portrait was in his private collection. At the time it was acquired at the posthumous dispersal of Degas's collection in 1918, the date of the painting was noted on the reverse. This is no longer visible.
