In this picture, the Trinity is represented by God the father (who holds up the Cross), the crucified Christ, and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove.
At the foot of the Cross stand the Virgin and Saints James the Greater, John and Peter. Mary Magdalene, Saint Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus kneel in front. Behind these, two angels hold the spear and the sponge, both instruments of the sufferings of Christ.
