The motif of the two holy children embracing derives from a design by Leonardo. The painting is very worn and the degree to which Fra Bartolommeo worked on it is hard to assess. A studio sketch of this design is in the Royal Collection, Windsor.
The town in the left background is repeated in Fra Bartolommeo's 'Vision of Saint Bernard' (Florence, Galleria Accademia).
