The Virgin and Child with Saint John Print
by National Gallery

£20.00

1400s

The painting long carried a false signature of Perugino's on the hem of the Virgin's robe. The work is in fact probably by a close associate and imitator of Perugino.

The painting was originally round-topped and it is now displayed with a recreated addition at the top. The Virgin's robe is painted in ultramarine, the most expensive and intense blue pigment and one often reserved for the Virgin's drapery.
