The painting is probably a relatively early work, from the mid-1660s, when Metsu had moved from Leiden to Amsterdam.
On the rear wall of the room hangs a painting of a Twelfth Night Feast partially concealed by a curtain. It is based on a painting of this subject by Metsu himself now in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich. There is also a landscape in the style of Jacob van Ruisdael. Inscriptions from the Psalms decorate the virginal, which appears in other works by Metsu.
