One of four panels from the shutters of the high altarpiece in the Benedictine Abbey of Liesborn in Westphalia, Germany. They also included 'The Adoration of the Kings' and 'The Presentation in the Temple' (of which fragments are in the Collection). In the centre was a 'Crucifixion'; fragments from this are also in the Collection. In this scene the angel announces the birth of Christ to Mary in an interior rich with contemporary domestic details. The various coats of arms in the stained glass must refer to donors of the altarpiece or benefactors of the abbey.
