This is an early work by Filippino Lippi. The Christ Child holds a pomegranate, a symbol of the Passion. The young Saint John the Baptist wears a camel skin tunic and holds a reed cross.
The book on the parapet is inscribed with imitations of letters which do not actually form an inscription.
