An angel appears to the prophet Elijah on Mount Horeb and instructs him 'to stand upon the Mount before the Lord'. Old Testament (1 Kings 19: 5-12).
This painting, and Dughet's 'Landscape with Abraham and Isaac', may be the two paintings which had entered the collection of the Roman aristocrat, Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna, by 1664.
