This is the largest and the finest of Dolci's versions of this subject. The three kings, in opulent robes, kneel before the Virgin to present their gifts to the Christ Child on her knee, who blesses them in return. The haloes of the Holy Family are outlined in gold leaf, as is the light radiating from the Child.
The richness of paint and refinement of detail can be seen in the fragments of gold leaf placed beneath the transparent paint to glow through the jewels on Caspar's robe. The sumptuousness of the garments enlivens the darkness of the stable setting.
