A Young Woman kneeling at a Prayer Desk Print
by National Gallery

£20.00

1700s

The subject is almost certainly Lady Augusta Phipps (1800-12), the recently deceased daughter of Wilkie’s patron the 1st Earl of Mulgrave.

She turns to the viewer, as if discovered at her prayers.

Contrasting forms of illumination and details such as the exquisitely depicted silver candlesticks show off Wilkie’s particular skills as a painter.
