1700s

Derived from an engraving after a portrait by Louis Tocqué of 1748. Charles Edward Stuart (1720 - 1788) was born and died in Rome, and was the grandson of King James II of England who had been exiled. He led the Jacobite rebellion intended to restore the Stuarts to the throne but after the defeat at Culloden in 1746 he escaped to France.
