Cunera Cornelisdr. van der Cock (1629/30 - 1700) married Frans van Mieris in 1657. She was the mother of Willem van Mieris whose work is also represented in the National Gallery's Collection. This portrait is the companion piece to a 'Self Portrait' of the artist now in Berlin (Gemäldegalerie). Both portraits were painted about 1657/8.

On loan to the exhibition 'Frans van Mieris the Elder' at Mauritshuis, The Hague from October 2005 to January 2006 and the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. from February to May 2006.
