The sitters are William Hallett (1764 - 1842) and his wife Elizabeth, née Stephen (1763/64 - 1833); they married on 30 July 1785.
The picture, with its light feathery brushstrokes typical of Gainsborough's late style, must date from about that time. The present title is probably of comparatively recent origin.
