Van den Bergen's work consists mainly of Italianate landscapes in the manner of the later work of Adriaen van de Velde, to whom this painting was once attributed. The current attribution is based on comparison with signed pictures by van den Bergen, such as 'Landscape with Herdsmen and Cattle' (Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum).
