by National Gallery

£20.00

1600s

Berchem often used Italian landscapes as settings for idyllic scenes of peasant life. Here, the man plays a hurdy-gurdy while the woman is taking care of the child in her lap. Many of Berchem's paintings were based on drawings of the Roman Campagna that he made during his stay in Italy (about 1650-4).
