Gerardo Sagredo (1692 - 1738), the subject of the engraved portrait in the background, was elected Procurator of S. Marco in 1718. This portrait is a variation of an engraving by Andrea Zucchi (based on a full-length painting of Sagredo by Uberti). The scene is perhaps set in the Sagredo Palace, Venice. The picture has been thought to represent a family group or a scene from a play but conclusive evidence is lacking.
It seems likely that this painting dates from the first half of the 1750s. A drawing for the two women on the left is in the Museo Correr, Venice.
