The story of the visit of the Athenian legislator Solon to King Croesus at Sardis is told by Herodotus and Plutarch. Croesus considered himself the happiest of men because of his immense wealth, but Solon disabused him.
The figures (and perhaps the flowers) are by a follower of Jan Brueghel the Elder.
