John Plampin Print
by National Gallery

£20.00

1700s

The identification of the sitter as John Plampin (1727? - 1805) is almost certain. He inherited Shimpling and Chadacre Hall, near Lavenham, Suffolk, in 1757.

The pose derives from a lost picture by Watteau, which was engraved in 1734. The costume and style of the painting suggest a date of about 1752.
