1400s

The singers may have been real individuals, but it is unlikely that this picture was meant as a group portrait. It was probably one of a series of panels decorating a music room or studiolo. Other panels may have shown different musical instruments. 15th-century artists were interested in painting song, and the expressions of those who sang, such as the angels in Piero della Francesca's 'Nativity'.
