Dordrecht (Dort) is seen in the background from the south-east, with the Grote Kerk in the centre, and the Vuilpoort, one of the town's water-gates (demolished in 1864) on the left.
This painting exactly repeats the view of Dordrecht seen in the so-called 'The Large Dort', also in the National Gallery's Collection, and has been tentatively dated to the early 1650s.
