Christ carries the Cross on his way to Golgotha. New Testament (Luke 23: 27-31). He is led by a rope tied around his neck. He looks back at his mother, Mary, who is attended by other women.
This panel formed the central scene of the seven scenes of Christ's Passion in the predella of the high altarpiece of S. Croce, Florence. The Crucifixion was omitted from the predella, but placed instead above the main central panel which showed the Virgin and Child.
