Portrait of a Lady Print
by National Gallery

£20.00

1400s

On the reverse is a painting of the head of Christ crowned with thorns (probably from the workshop of Rogier van der Weyden). It is unusual, but not unparalleled, to find a religious image on the reverse of a portrait.

The costume suggests a date after 1460, perhaps around 1466. It also suggests that the sitter is a gentlewoman, rather than a member of the nobility.
