5 Best Museums for Family Fun

Our top picks for the best five museums in London for families to have a lot of fun at from natural history to film, military, media and royalty

Knowing where to take the kids on a trip to London can be a tricky thing. On one hand you want to leave them at a mainline station with a one way ticket, on the other hand that could be child abuse. So let's go with option three: you want it to be fun, inspiring, in-expensive and tire them out enough to give you some peace and quiet in the evening. Of course the Science Museum and the National History Museum are always big hits with families but what are the other top museums that can entertain and educate.

Well do not fear, before we pose too many questions, we have answers as we have picked five of our favourite museums. What's even better than that, most of them are free leaving you more money to waste in the souvenir shops or at one of London's best kid friendly restaurants.

London Film Museum

Based in Covent Garden the London Film Museum will definitely be popular with any fans of the James Bond film franchise as it is home to more than 100 vehicles and other props from them. With free entry for kids available on selected dates it is definitely a museum that kids and fathers will probably enjoy at least.

HMS Belfast

Located on the river Thames close to Southbank HMS Belfast saw action in the second world war and the Korean war. As a visitor you can explore all nine decks from the guns that fired some of the first shots on D-Day to the engine rooms and discover what life was like on board for the crew at war and at sea. The sheer size of the ship will impress the kids whilst the stories they hear will no doubt leave an impression.

Natural History Museum & Ice Rink

Opened in 1881 at its current location in South Kensington the Natural History Museum brings nature to life, pardon the pun. With more than eighty million items in its collection there are many things to amaze, enlighten and entertain. From huge dinosaurs to a full size model of a blue whale kids will be in awe and no doubt create memories that last a lifetime. The ice rink is open from 25th October 2018 to the 20th January 2019 making the museum a great place to visit at Christmas time.

Madame Tussauds London

Not exactly everyone's idea of a traditional museum doesn't stop Madam Tussauds being educational. Located close to Baker Street and originally opened in 1836 it is more popular than ever. Kids will love to have their photos taken with the many "famous faces" ranging from Donald Trump to Darth Vadar.

Buckingham Palace

Open to the public for a few months every summer this world famous working palace is not exactly a museum or a gallery but it still is home to some of the most important artistic and decorative items the nation owns. Being such an iconic building kids will be stunned by its size and the splendour of the decorations and objects it houses.

If you have your own favourite fun family friendly museum that we have not featured we would love to hear about it. Not only can you earn London points you will also be helping to improve our London guide and London blog.
