Guide to... City of London
A city within a city, the City of London is also known as the Square Mile (although it actually covers an area of 1.12 square miles). The area it covers constitutes most of what was Londoninium, the settlement created by the Romans in the 1st century AD by clearing a forest, It has been self governed for 2000 years. The law and practice of the Romans became the basis of London’s institutions and political language.
The City of London is known as a hub of financial services such as insurance, commodities trading and investment. Its reputation was seriously damaged in the eyes of many when in September 2018 the British Government was forced to hand the banks headquartered in the City of London £1,600,000,000,000 (equivalent to 12.5% of the total net wealth of all households in Great Britain). The reasoning behind this was that the entire economy of the country would cease to function otherwise. The money has never been accounted for.
