Guide to... Old Compton Street
Old Compton Street is synonymous with gay culture for both fantastic and tragic reasons. When the 1999 bombings hit the Admiral Duncan it was a transformative event for homosexuals in London. Whilst the deaths can never be vindicated it echoed out a change in public sentiment that made Old Compton Street a symbol for reconciliation.
This symbolism was serendipitous and more poignant as Old Compton Street is historically a Catholic area and the Good Friday Agreement was fresh in the public memory as was the recent tragic death Princess Diana's who was well know for campaigning for acceptance of Aids victims and homosexuals. These factors contributed to a climate of reconciliation and new acceptance between social groups.
