Guide to... Waterloo Place
Located just off Pall Mall, Waterloo Place is a memoriam to the Duke of Wellington's victory over Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815 and other British military victories. The square is decorated with eleven statues and monuments. Having a statue of you erected in Waterloo place is perhaps one of the most prestigious posthumous awards you could receive as a British citizen or former King.
After the demolition of the former residence of the Prince Regent in 1825 the square was created. There are memorials to the Crimean War, including one to Florence Nightingale; a statue of Edward VII mounted on a horse; and a column in honour of the Duke of York.
Pedestrians can walk towards or away from Buckingham Palace using the "Duke of York steps" which join the Mall next to the Institute of Contemporary Arts.
