London's Best for Fish & Chips
Our picks for the best fish and chip shops in central London including fish and chip shops in Soho, Mayfair, and other popular central London areas.
London. The city of culture. Rain and Fish and Chips. There is nothing better on a rainy day than quality and proper fish and chips to warm the soul. They're great brain food; well at least that can be the excuse to chow down on some delicious battered goodness with chunky chips and mushy peas! Here are our favourites!
Golden Union Fish Bar
If you are after a good catch of the day, then all you have to do is check over the menu at Golden Union Fish Bar and it's evident that they are the crème de la crème! Fish is chunky, flaky and perfectly cooked in a light, crispy, complementary batter and chips are crisp, firm and fluffy; pies and fish cakes are a league of their own. So if you're after a gem of a chippie and comes with beer-battered sustainable fish, head to the Golden Union.
When I was living on Jermyn Street visiting Golden Union became a literal ritual on a Friday night and once you taste the food for yourself you will be as hooked as I was, pardon the pun.
Poppie's Fish and Chips (Old Compton Street)
Poppies is a cut above, with Billingsgate-sourced fish is so fresh that diners are offered the option of having it grilled as well as fried. Takeaway orders in faux-newspaper wraps are doled out by waitresses in diner-style outfits complete with retro headscarves. After something more than just cod or haddock, their menu also have mackerel, jellied eels and seafood platter. Poppies is definitely fish and chips at its best.
Bentley's Oyster Bar & Grill (Mayfair)
Bentley's Oyster Bar & Grill have got the right idea for a Monday; they offer a complimentary glass of bubbles with their fish and chips, just remember to quote " Fish and Chips offer" when booking. Serving some of London's best seafood, with their marble-topped bar, dining room and outdoor terrace. If you're after a very welcoming reception, lined cladded tables and a warm and friendly atmosphere, then look no further. A British culinary delight, if there ever was one.
Bonnie Gull Seafood Shack (Bateman Street)
If you're after a bit of a twist when it comes to the nation's most loved dish, then check out Bonnie Gull, with their beer battered North Sea haddock and beef dripping chunky chips. Now, whilst this sounds particularly normal, the batter is made using a Japanese tempura mix making it seriously crispy! If you like a ketchup and mushy peas you won't be disappointed with their homemade variety alongside their décor, where you can feel you're eating the by the seaside. What's not to love?
Fish Central
Fish Central opened in 1968 and the old-school Clerkenwell institution appears to have barely changed in all its years. This place knows its stuff about Fish and all things Fish! Serving a range that spans grilled sardines, oysters and lobster and not forgetting the most important addition, their chunky chips! The quality is fantastic and the price is almost too good to be true. Fish Central restores your faith in decent seafood and fish and chips.
